the fountain’s edge

The site location of this observatory building is located on the edge of Lake Erie incorporating elements such as a lake view, Canadian wind effects and the top layers of the Earth’s crust (water, wind and earth). The site is represented in foam core covered in tinted acrylic gesso. The shale sedimentary rock below the ground surface is exposed on the bottom layer of the observatory modeled in hydrocal casting material. A fountain exists in the middle of the interior structure to gather rain water with overflows directed off the edge of the cliff into the lake. The inside of the observatory is a serene environment in a dark enclosure so sounds of nature fill the space. The circular first floor directs wind flow around the building constructed out of basswood sheets and strips for the walls and door.
